2007 Kosherfest review

Kosher Show Review

The Kosher Show was held on November 11-12 in New York City. I only attended on November 11 with my husband. There were more than 150 booths of which appx 100 were food related. An overall theme for me seemed to be convenience kosher foods. I noticed a lot of par boiled baked goods- Crusty Bread, Laromme Bakery, Purple Pear all had these type of products. We also noticed several companies with ravioli, and dried pastas (like Contadina).

There were the usual vendors Abeles and Heyman, Manishevitz and Rokeach that you can find at your local supermarket. Here is a round up of what I saw that looked interesting.

From Israel:

Aunt Berta’s showed several new products such as honey, onions in red wine and reintroduced the onion jam that won a prize at kosherfest several years ago.

From Portugal

Gourmet Lusitano Extra virgin olive oil

Restaurant Row
It was somewhat disappointing. There were 10 restaurants. One served tortillas and salsa which I tasted at other booths. Caffe Gio served a pasta dish with pesto dressing, Chosen Garden served some Chinese food Estihana served sushi and Grille de Paris served meat. Some of the other restaurants served some dessert items, but none of the other restaurants served items from their menu. I did not get a real sense of how good their food was and why I should travel to their restaurant. I also did not take back some ideas for my own menus, or discover the types of ingredients I should have on my store shelves (koshergourmetmart.com)
Perhaps it was different on Monday.

I find this show is disappoining in comparison with the Fancy Food Show where I hunt for interesting kosher products and there is a bigger selecion. All in all, the show was fun and I did get to spend the day with my husband.

FROM MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA KASHRUT Authority the award wining Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Redisland Australia. Already available in New York, Los Angeles, Houston etc (eg Stop & Shop, Walbraums, A&P Ralphs,Nob Hill, Save Mart etc ..go to www.redisland.com and see.
KOSHERFEST NEW YORK DISPLAYS REDISLAND AUSTRALIA LTD’S 100% OLIVE OIL (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) for the first time.
Unbeknown to many of even the finest food connoisseurs, the majority of imported virgin olive oil products on our supermarket shelves are not in fact, pure olive oil at all, posing a significant question regarding the current Kashrut laws with respect to olive oil.
Currently, all extra virgin olive oil is considered kosher. However, while many high quality brands in particular imported oils claim their “extra virgin” olive oil is 100% pure, recent tests carried out by the Australian NSW Government authorities, have proved otherwise. Funded by the Australian Olive Industry, the tests uncovered that the majority of imported olive oil, although sold in Australia as extra virgin, are in fact poorer quality oils, which in some cases contain a mixture of other oil varieties including canola oil.
Olives have an important and ancient connection with Judaism, being one of Israel’s seven agricultural species. Further, the use of olive oil in Jewish life traces back more than 2000 years to an ancient olive press still present at the base of Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives.
With a potential issue posed in verifying the percentage by volume of extra virgin olive oil (cold pressed) contained in the imported olive oils, a new Australian olive oil product will be widely welcomed by the kosher community when made available later this month. Redisland Extra Virgin Olive Oil is 100% pure extra virgin olive oil and certified Kosher by the Kashrut Authority of Australia for use during both Passover and throughout the year.

Dear Bella
You are so right and after doing a tasting of the local olive oils with those from the Mediterranean there is NO doubt the Australian olive oil has a fresher taste, nicer aroma and a compliment to to the chef's cuisine. In fact the redisland is 5 star on the tasting wheel and on the quality assessment charts whereas it competitors are closer to 3 star.
During the month of July tastings of the oil will be held on the 4th July in Toronto, 6th July Toronto, 15th through to the 28 in New York, August 5-17 in Rio de Janeiro, 19th to 21st in Los Angeles for any distributors, executive chefs that wish to email Steven.horton@redisland.com
