2007 Kosherfest review

Kosher Show Review

The Kosher Show was held on November 11-12 in New York City. I only attended on November 11 with my husband. There were more than 150 booths of which appx 100 were food related. An overall theme for me seemed to be convenience kosher foods. I noticed a lot of par boiled baked goods- Crusty Bread, Laromme Bakery, Purple Pear all had these type of products. We also noticed several companies with ravioli, and dried pastas (like Contadina).

There were the usual vendors Abeles and Heyman, Manishevitz and Rokeach that you can find at your local supermarket. Here is a round up of what I saw that looked interesting.

Alcohol

Cow Jumped Over the Moon. Delicious French wine including a $190 Domaine Gibourd Pommard 2005. My husband remarked that you could taste the quality of these wines.

Liquori Kosher OU certified Limoncello, Orange liquer, Chocolate liquer, wild fennel liquer and myrtle liquor.

Baked Goods-Dessert
Exceptional Brownie-brownies with flavors like Double Chocolate, Butterscotch blondie and raspberry swirl. The chocolate brownie was not too sweet.

Skinner Baking Company-interesting baked goods similar in look to entemmans. We tasted a really nice dulce de leche roulade

Strauss Bakery-beautiful cakes for weddings and simchas including a Louis Vuitton bag, hats and other cakes covered with fondant.

Beverages

The Simple Kitchen. Sparkling water with a splash of organic juice and honey. Flavors include: white grape, lemon & mint and pink grapefruit. Beautiful packaging and tasty product.

Trim Water Nutritionally enhanced water with only 1 g of sugar and 4 calories per serving. No Artificial colors or flavors, no aspartame. Flavors include: peach-mango, blueberry-pear and lemon-citrus

Bread product

Bagel-Os bagels filled with fillings like cream cheese, or salmon cream cheese or blueberry cream cheese. A Kosherfest winner!

Crusty Bread-delicious french bread from France that you can bake at home!

Candy

YummyEarth is introducing many new products. Some new flavors are: Blood Orange Cocktail, Chili Lime Lambada, Ginger Zest, Googly Grape, Hopscotch Butterscotch, Strawberry Smash, Roadside Root Beer, Tooberry blueberry, and Very Very Cherry. There was new mixed flavor bags of: Super Sour: with googly grape, strawberry smash, sour apple tart and very very cherry’ anti-oxi fruit drops include pomegranate pucker, tooberry blueberry, Strawberry smash and very very cherry and vitamin c drops with vitamin c added. They also have nicely packaged artisinal single candy flavors.

Cheese

Gad Dairies a full line of fetas and other Israeli cheese

Le Petite Fermiere has redone their labels.

Yotvata cheese-there was fresh mozarella, Scamorza, silamon, provolone, fontina and others from Italy

Chocolate

Chocolatewise. Truffles like Light caramel, Cappuccino, and vanilla. All dairy truffles are chalav Yisrael

Roland Foods had chocolate covered cherries with a stem

Rue Lafayette-pareve fondue sets. It comes packaged with 3 fondue flavors that you melt and use in the platter. The platter can be used at a later date to serve vegetables or other desserts.

Tumbador Gourmet Ring Dings-flourless chocolate cake filled with buttercream and enrobed in chocolate.

Condiments

Aunt Lupe’s Original Jalapeno Garden Mix. A delicious condiment made with jalapenos and habanera peppers.

Colgin Worceshire sauce and liquid smoke

The Sauce Guy Delicious bbque sauce

Dressings

Sonny Joe’s delicious salad dressings including white wine vinaigrette and Caesar Salad as well as pickles.

Fish

Orkney Herring. My husband thought it was great. It comes in several marinades.

R&J Seafood Fresh fish shipped direct to you at home.

Meat

RJ’s Gourmet beef jerky. Jerky in various flavors.

Nuts

Sheffa Foods-various nut mixes

Pasta

Bruno pasta introduced a chocolate fettucini and ravioli.

Fiorella had fresh pasta like Contadina

Gad Dairies makes a ravioli filled with their delicious cheeses and mushrooms

Snack
Thou Shall Snack had a new Latke Chip pareve flavor-Zest Veggie as well as Babka Bites-2 flavors: chocolate and Cinnamon. The bites also hapopen to be organic.

Tomato products

Giovanni - organic salsas and tomato sauces (plain and organic) with flavors like Tomato Basil. Spicy tomato, roasted red pepper.

Other:
Wagatha’s dog biscuits with flavors like Tuscan tomato and cranberry cheddar.

Interesting International Products

From Argentina
Cachamai Herbal tea including Green tea, pink tea, camomile, yerba mate and Linden tree

Lipo lollipops, candies including milk flavored lollipops.

Muller-meals for the traveler including roast beef in tomato sauce. Pastrami and frankfurters. Made with 100% Argentina Glatt kosher beef. I did not get to taste them.

Pozo-Delicious vanilla madeleines, dulce de leche magdaenas, and small cakes.

From Australia
Veggie Gourmet including fresh dips like mashed potato and onions, sweet carrots, and spicy lentils and beans. They also make fresh pestos, and antipasto and oven roasted vegetables.

From Israel:

Aunt Berta’s showed several new products such as honey, onions in red wine and reintroduced the onion jam that won a prize at kosherfest several years ago.

From Portugal

Gourmet Lusitano Extra virgin olive oil

Restaurant Row
It was somewhat disappointing. There were 10 restaurants. One served tortillas and salsa which I tasted at other booths. Caffe Gio served a pasta dish with pesto dressing, Chosen Garden served some Chinese food Estihana served sushi and Grille de Paris served meat. Some of the other restaurants served some dessert items, but none of the other restaurants served items from their menu. I did not get a real sense of how good their food was and why I should travel to their restaurant. I also did not take back some ideas for my own menus, or discover the types of ingredients I should have on my store shelves (koshergourmetmart.com)
Perhaps it was different on Monday.

I find this show is disappoining in comparison with the Fancy Food Show where I hunt for interesting kosher products and there is a bigger selecion. All in all, the show was fun and I did get to spend the day with my husband.

Would you like to spend some time giving back, helping to make Israel a better place for those less fortunate?
And, most important:
Are you a true CHOCOLATE lover?
THEN THIS IS THE TOUR FOR YOU!!

CHOCOLATE AT HEART:

The World's First Chocolate-and-Charity Tour of Israel!

If a day just isn't complete for you without at least one bite of chocolate for health reasons (even if that's just an excuse) or just because it makes you feel great, then this trip is for you! This is your chance to do all this, and more - and to do it in Israel!!!

The truth is, there are dozens of boutique chocolatiers throughout Israel, creating countless exquisite and delicious chocolate creations every day, and yet they've barely been heard of overseas.

We are thrilled to introduce you to the world of Israeli gourmet chocolates, as well as a myriad of other culinary treats in this fun tour of the country, from the Mediterranean, up to the hills of Galilee and the Golan and down to the holy city of Jerusalem and beyond.

For 8 fun-filled days and 9 relaxing nights you will discover several of the many fabulous and undiscovered boutique chocolate companies that operate all over Israel

in cities, in kibbutzim, on moshavim.

You will take part in workshops, learn hands-on how to make ganache, truffles, intriguing chocolate sculptures and much more.

You will learn everything there is to know about this wonderful ingredient: Its history, production, uses, types and even health benefits!

And each night, on your pillow, we will surprise you with yet a sample from yet another fabulous chocolate-making enterprise to take home as a delicious souvenir or enjoy on the spot!

And that's not all!

This tour is not only about chocolate!

You will enjoy a host of other culinary experiences such as visiting exclusive and unique wineries, cooking a gourmet meal with one of the country's leading cooking teachers and exploring one of the country's best-stocked kitchen supply stores.

You will stay in some of the country's most luxurious hotels, as well as a few of the exclusive boutique hotels one can find around Israel in some of the smaller, more charming and interesting locations.

You will enjoy 3 meals a day, many of them in small countryside restaurants, in the north and central parts of the country, meat and dairy and of course with delicious chocolate desserts - and all Kosher, of course!

And we have several surprise events in store, still in the planning stages, but sure to delight and excite you!

But there's more!

This trip is not only about touring and eating and shopping. It will also include several opportunities for you to help the less fortunate and meet some of the many people who are involved in amazing tzedakah (charity) projects.

We will visit with Gush Katif evacuees and hold a bridal shower, bringing gifts to some of the young brides from this uprooted population.

We will help prepare and distribute Shabbat meals to needy families.

We will pick farm produce that will then be donated to the poor.

We will distribute chocolates we purchase to some of our young IDF soldiers guarding us at the country's checkpoints.
